So what’s your unconventional Christmas film?

Last night I had some friends over and somehow the topic of 'unconventional Christmas films' came up. You know the movies that you (and possibly only you) associate with Christmas even though there's not much Christmas in them?  For me it's The Talented Mr. Ripley.  I know that there is a brief and disturbing Christmas scene in it (the one where Ripley is busy unwrapping his Christmas gifts that he bought for himself while impersonating Dickie Greenleaf), but I wouldn't exactly call it a 'Christmasy Film'.  I think it must of been released around Christmas many years back and that's why it sticks in my head as a must see around the holiday season.   My friend Annie felt that for her it's 'The Shining'.  I believe that there was a brief moment of confused silence before she explained that it was because of all the snow.  Sure, why not. 'Black Christmas' was another one that came up, although there is the direct link to Christmas with that one, albeit a creepy link (and we're talking the original Black Christmas here not the remake).   I still have yet to ask John, mainly because I'm worried his response would be something completely bizarre.   Shall we take bets on what it will be?

And a note about originals.  I've barely had any time in my studio this past week.  Those darn print orders are taking up most of my time, plus I've been acting as the fill-in when John can't wait around in the post office line- up.  It's typical that now that I have all kinds of ideas for new work, I  can't find the time to go and paint.   Hopefully I'll have an original ready for Sunday or Monday.

The Feline And The Fox

The Feline And The Fox, 10"x12", oil on canvas.  Sold.

Gosh, it was hard to get a decent shot of this one.  We've had dark skies and rain for two days and light seems quite scarce.  I'll have to re-shoot it for prints on a brighter day.  Hopefully this might perk up those who are under this crazy cloud along with most of Ontario.  Snow is better than this I think.   I don't know about you but I could certainly put on my party dress and start swilling the champagne and popping back the macaroons.  Time to get into some sort of party mode!

A Wild Bunch

A Wild Bunch, oil on canvas, 11"x14".  For sale on etsy.

A wild bunch indeed.  Did I go a little crazy with the critters?  Perhaps a bit.  But the Dutch masters were fond of the critters as well, so there's really no point in holding back.

And speaking of crazy, that's pretty much my state of mind as I sit here typing this while still wearing my pajamas- having yet to make it into the shower today and it's 1pm. I'm wading through all of the Black Friday orders......looks like I know where I will be these next few days:  Tied to my printer...still in my pajamas possibly.  But I'm not complaining as it keeps me out of trouble.

Black Friday Sale!

It's that time of year again!  Time to get a jump start on Christmas shopping and save a little money in the process!  For anyone who is not aware, I do live in Canada and therefore shipping prints to one of my more popular destinations like the USA can start to take a little longer once you get closer to December.  So now is the time!  Currently the shipping times to the USA/Europe/UK and Australia from Canada are between 7-14 days.

I've decided to opt for an etsy coupon code this year that you can easily use at the etsy checkout to deduct the 20% off all prints and cards (sorry but this doesn't apply to original artwork).  The coupon code is: blackfriday.  So this means that the prices that you will see in my shop are NOT the sale prices- and the reduction will happen at the etsy checkout.

The sale starts tonight at 9pm EST and will run until Monday at 11pm EST.

Happy shopping!

Kathleen would never be described as beautiful, but there was something extraordinary about her

Kathleen would never be described as beautiful, but there was something extraordinary about her.  8"x10".  Oil on canvas.  Sold.

The first line of Gone With The Wind always bothered me:   'Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful, but men seldom realized it when caught by her charm as the Tartleton twins were'.   In my mind Scarlett was one of the most beautiful women in literature.  The problem is that I watched the movie first- many times before reading the actual book.  And lets face it, Vivian Leigh is gorgeous.  I've never been able to reconcile that first line with how I perceive Scarlett and so I choose to ignore it.

I'm not sure if it's fair to say that about Kathleen here, but maybe that is for the viewer to decide?

Thank you for all of your wonderful comments and suggestions about my painter's funk.  I'm working my way through it.  I watched some trash tv- my God those ladies on the Housewives of New Jersey do get up to some crazy fighting....and I made homemade soup at a strange hour and I've been listening to the Rolling Stones a lot.  Not sure what will come out of it, but at least I'm not feeling completely stagnant anymore.
