The Barbizon Hotel 1953

The Barbizon Hotel 1953, oil on canvas, 16"x20".  For sale on etsy.

I know that I'm really stretching it here with my fantasy interpretation of the Barbizon Hotel For Women in New York during the 1950's.  I'm sure the rooms didn't have fireplaces and I think the colour scheme was more in the pinks and greens, but I'm going wild with artistic license here.  I think that this hotel is long overdue for a great film or series- perhaps with the same tone and style of Mad Men.  It was mentioned on Mad Men at least once as Don Draper was dating a young lady who was staying there.  It's a fascinating part of history and had many intriguing residents including Edith Bouvier Beale of Grey Gardens notoriety (pictured), Grace Kelly, Sylvia Plath, Joan Crawford, and Lauren Bacall to name a few.  It was a place where women could stay in New York and keep their reputations intact as the rules and regulations were so strict.  A dress code was even in place.  Sounds like the perfect ingredients for a great story.

Pirate Jenny

Pirate Jenny, oil on canvas, 10"x12".  Sold.

Pirate Jenny is not to be trifled with.  However, she does have a pretty bedroom and a neat plaster bust to put her fashionable pirate hat on.

Hipster Crafter

Hipster Crafter, oil on canvas, 8"x10".  Sold.

You know the type.  She can make amazing wallets and Christmas ornaments out of a few pieces of felt and a button. She makes her own clothes (without a pattern) and everyone wants to know where she bought them.  She takes super cool photos of her daily life with her vintage polaroid then blogs about it- relentlessly.  Her garden is crazy beautiful even though you have never seen her in it.  Her garlic and white bean dip rocks your world and when she tells you that all of the ingredients came from her vegetable garden, you find yourself terribly ashamed of the three withered herb plants that you tried to grow earlier in the spring.  She has an uncanny ability to go to the Goodwill and find the best junk and proceeds to furnish her perfect house out of her vintage finds, meanwhile when you visit the second hand shops and garage sales there's nothing but junk that smells like cat pee.  To top it off, she can play the accordion, or perhaps the theremin (if she's an uber hipster) and wears the coolest eyewear while doing it.

Giraffes
