Here's a good example of how I can start a painting with a specific idea and how it completely morphs into something else. This was supposed to have been my bee painting, as I discussed in an earlier post, but then something happened and it turned into a watermelon and dog themed piece. One never knows where a painting will end up. I'll try and reconfigure the bees into something else.

The Maiden Voyage, oil on canvas, 30"x36". For sale on etsy.
Well, I've finally completed this monster of a painting. I know that 30"x36" isn't huge, but it's big for me, especially when you consider that my studio space is something like 5'x6'. Tiny! If you would like to get a better look at it (there's a lot going on it this piece) click on the link below and it will take you to etsy and from there, you can click on the actual painting and it will zoom in for you.
In terms of inspiration, I can't really say where or why this piece came about. I have a thing for ships and I wanted to paint my version of the SS Normandie for quite some time, so that's how it basically started. I'm partial to parrots too, in fact, all things nautical. The little painting of "Sailor Jack" was tossed in on a whim, but now I feel he really makes the piece complete. The chandelier was my own little creation and is supposed to resemble seaweed- sort of.
I'll be taking a small break from painting so that I can recharge my batteries, but I should be back next week with some slightly smaller pieces. Oh, and I'm crossing my fingers that my print shipment will arrive before the weekend!

Here's a cheery one. I couldn't help myself with the title, it just kept popping in my head. I even made a little jingle for it. I think I need to get out of the house and go do something different for the next hour.

The Princess Phone, oil on canvas, 8"x10". Sold.
I watched 'A Single Man' last night and became obsessed. Not so much with Colin Firth like most people would, but rather with the style of the film and more specifically with Charley's (Julianne Moore) house, furnishings, accessories, and her adorable aqua princess phone. This painting was well underway, but I just knew that princess phone belonged in this painting. It was the missing piece to the puzzle.
I think Tom Ford should make more movies, even though it made me cry.
Mended, 7"x9", oil on canvas. Sold.
I couldn't help but toss in Holly Golightly's sleep mask into the painting.
