I suppose I'm a big cheater. When faced with the task of baking two cakes, I ran out and purchased two boxes of Betty Crocker cake mixes. Then, to make it taste homemade, I made the icing from scratch. No one could tell that it wasn't all homemade. I had a fun time with the photo shoot so there will be some more cake paintings in the future....

The Poodles Adore Pastries, 10"x14", oil on canvas. Sold.
Thought I would end my week on a cute note. I saw the poodle salt and pepper shakers in Be Joyful Vintage's shop and thought that they were the missing piece to a painting that had been rolling around in my head. Strangely enough, the owner of Be Joyful Vintage just happened to be visiting the city that I live in that very day to see a play. Talk about meant to be. So after a few quick emails she was able to drop them off personally at the bookshop. Such great service!
I don't think I mentioned earlier, but it's my husband's birthday week....yes, he seems to get a birthday week. Not sure how that started. So I'll be taking the rest of the week off from posting to cater to his demands. Thankfully, they seem to be all food based and nothing that involves sports or watching his terrible 1970's Italian thriller films that he loves to haul out. Tonight it's an Indian restaurant, which is way, waaaay better than the McDonald's picnic that we had earlier in the week. I also have to bake a couple of cakes (long story) but I'll be able to photograph them for a painting that I have planned so all is not lost.
I hope you have a fabulous and cake filled weekend too!
A Tempting Trio, oil paint on paper, 5"x7". Sold
The Maiden Voyage, oil on canvas, 30"x36". For sale on etsy.
Well, I've finally completed this monster of a painting. I know that 30"x36" isn't huge, but it's big for me, especially when you consider that my studio space is something like 5'x6'. Tiny! If you would like to get a better look at it (there's a lot going on it this piece) click on the link below and it will take you to etsy and from there, you can click on the actual painting and it will zoom in for you.
In terms of inspiration, I can't really say where or why this piece came about. I have a thing for ships and I wanted to paint my version of the SS Normandie for quite some time, so that's how it basically started. I'm partial to parrots too, in fact, all things nautical. The little painting of "Sailor Jack" was tossed in on a whim, but now I feel he really makes the piece complete. The chandelier was my own little creation and is supposed to resemble seaweed- sort of.
I'll be taking a small break from painting so that I can recharge my batteries, but I should be back next week with some slightly smaller pieces. Oh, and I'm crossing my fingers that my print shipment will arrive before the weekend!

Store Bought, oil on canvas, 10"x14". Sold.
I spent most of the weekend working away on that larger piece that I mentioned in an earlier post and I found myself so fed up with it that I needed to paint something a little looser for a while. This painting is the result. It's sketchier and looser than what I normally do and was a refreshing change from the detail of the big canvas. Plus, I've always wanted to paint chocolate mice. I think they may appear in a few more paintings in the future.
