Country Squires, oil on canvas, 7"x9".  Sold.

I'm uncertain as to what I've painted here.  I mean, I don't know if they are elk or stag, or just male deers- or are those stags?  I think a male deer is a stag- right?  All I know is that I looked at a bevy of stag images and after a while I realized just how strange they actually look.  Everything looks normal until you get to the horns- are those horns? It's the horns that seem utterly surreal.  We're so used to looking at these animals that you don't really think about it until you stare at them for quite a while and it suddenly dawns on you that these sweet little animals have a fierce weapon attached to their heads that they are forced to cart around with them all the time.  Weird.

I've had too much caffeine this week.

  1. I just love this Janet! I’ve been saving this image for some time to paint myself…I could never capture it as beautifully as you. Love it!

    • I felt that my squires really needed a very special country house. I’m not sure where this house is- possibly France? It’s really remarkable though.

  2. You can tell they’re looking for just the right green things to start munching on! Don’t be fooled by their cuteness! Great painting! LOVE the manor house.
